Uttarakhand has officially certified 23% of its total land for organic farming but the government is committed to increasing the certified percentage of land for organic farming in the state to 31% by the end of 2021.

Uttarakhand government has a target to certify 31% of the total agricultural land as organic in 2021 to expand the area under organic farming, said state agriculture minister Subodh Uniyal on Tuesday in Dehradun. However Uttarakhand and Sikkim has declared themselves as 'Organic States'. This paper tries to focus on the development of organic farming in the state of Uttarakhand. Organic agriculture is developing rapidly; its share in agricultural land and farms continues to grow in many countries.

Most of the hill farmers in Uttarakhand are deprived of resources and therefore use very few chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides. As a result, mountain soil is almost free of pesticide and chemical fertilizer residues. This is a very strong point for Uttarakhand to become a successful 'organic state'
